According to Silicon Republic, University College Dublin is spending €724,000 on a new Nvidia DGXB200 supercomputer called AURA that delivers 50 times the performance of their existing high-performance computing cluster. The system features eight Blackwell chips and offers triple the training performance compared to previous generations, representing the single largest AI supercomputing investment in the university’s history. Funded through the Higher Education Research Equipment Grant, AURA is expected to arrive on campus by early next year and will support research across healthcare, cultural analysis, business, and climate modeling. UCD has also invested an additional €1.45 million in upgrading existing clusters over the past year, making it the most powerful Irish university campus for AI and high-performance computing.

Now, here’s what they’re not talking about much – the ongoing costs. A €724,000 supercomputer isn’t a one-time purchase. The electricity bills alone will be staggering. These things are power-hungry beasts that need specialized cooling and maintenance. And what about the software licensing, the specialized staff to manage it, the inevitable upgrades? This initial investment is just the entry fee. Still, given how critical AI has become across every field from medicine to humanities, maybe it’s a necessary expense.
