Rising Fraud on Resale Platforms
Online marketplace shoppers are facing increasing risks from sophisticated scams, according to new research that reveals 37% of Britons have been defrauded while buying or selling on platforms including Vinted, Facebook Marketplace, and eBay. The data from credit reference agency Experian indicates that younger consumers are particularly vulnerable, with more than half (58%) of Gen Z respondents reporting they had been scammed compared to just 16% of those over 55.

The Counterfeit Product Epidemic
The most common scam encountered by consumers involves receiving fake or counterfeit products, which affected 34% of victims according to the report. One victim, Maheen, purchased what she believed was a genuine Dyson Airwrap for £260 on Vinted – significantly below the retail price of £400-£480. Despite the seller having five-star reviews, the product began smoking after just two weeks of use. “I got a letter from Dyson confirming the product was counterfeit. It was unsafe and they wouldn’t return it to me,” she stated.
Analysts suggest that the sophistication of these scams makes them difficult to detect. More than half (51%) of scam victims told researchers they only realized they had been defrauded once their item was delivered and discovered to be fake or never arrived. Sources indicate that scammers often use low-resolution photos or catalogue images taken from other websites to create the illusion of legitimacy.
Common Scam Tactics and Prevention
The report identifies several red flags consumers should watch for, including prices significantly below market value and sellers who attempt to rush purchases or request payments outside the official platform. Payment off-platform requests accounted for 31% of reported scams, while items never arriving after payment affected 22% of victims.
Protection measures recommended by experts include:
- Thoroughly reviewing seller profiles and customer reviews before purchasing
- Requesting additional product information, such as videos of the item in use
- Using secure payment methods through the official platform
- Avoiding bank transfers to individual sellers
Industry developments in consumer protection have led to new safeguards, though implementation varies across platforms. Recent technology in fraud detection continues to evolve as scammers develop new methods.

Seeking Recourse After Fraud
When scams occur, the report states that consumers should immediately report incidents to the marketplace and request refunds, providing screenshots of messages and seller details. For transactions outside protection windows or when platform resolution fails, additional options exist.
According to financial analysts, debit card users can request chargeback claims through their banks, while credit card purchases over £100 may qualify for Section 75 claims. New fraud refund protections in the United Kingdom may provide recourse even for bank transfer payments, though the process is reportedly more complicated.
A Vinted spokesperson stated: “The vast majority of transactions on Vinted take place without issue, and our teams work hard to ensure a smooth trading experience for all our members.” However, Maheen reported difficulty contacting the platform after her incident, noting “It felt like I was talking to a bot.” She eventually recovered her money with assistance from consumer advocacy services.
Related innovations in digital security and market trends in consumer technology are addressing these challenges, while workforce development in fraud prevention continues to expand across the industry.
