According to TheRegister.com, Europe has officially joined the exascale computing club with EuroHPC’s Jupiter supercomputer becoming the fourth publicly known system to exceed one million-trillion operations per second. The machine achieved 1 exaFLOPS in the High-Performance Linpack benchmark just six months after its partial debut at 793 petaFLOPS in June. Built by Eviden using Nvidia’s Grace-Hopper GH200 superchips, Jupiter currently sits just 12 petaFLOPS behind the US’s Aurora supercomputer in third place. The system isn’t even complete yet – its Universal Cluster section featuring SiPearl’s Rhea1 processors won’t come online until late 2025, adding another 5 petaFLOPS. This makes Jupiter the first public exascale system outside the United States, though China is believed to have several secret systems.
Europe’s Supercomputing Comeback
This is actually a pretty big deal for European tech sovereignty. For years, Europe has been playing catch-up in the high-performance computing race while the US and China dominated. Now they’ve got skin in the game with a system that’s not just competitive, but still has room to grow. The fact that Jupiter’s already nipping at Aurora’s heels before it’s even finished tells you something about the ambition here.
And here’s the thing about supercomputing – it’s not just about bragging rights. These machines drive real scientific breakthroughs in climate modeling, drug discovery, and materials science. Having local access to this kind of compute power means European researchers don’t have to queue for time on American or Chinese systems. That’s huge for research independence.
The Hardware Behind The Power
Jupiter’s architecture is actually pretty interesting. The current performance comes from what they call the “Booster” section – about 6,000 nodes each packing four Nvidia GH200 superchips. That’s roughly 24,000 chips total. But the real European flavor comes with the Universal Cluster section using SiPearl’s Rhea1 processors. These are European-designed Arm chips with 80 cores each, and they represent a serious bet on homegrown silicon.
Basically, they’re building a hybrid system where the GPU-heavy Booster handles the massively parallel workloads while the CPU-based Universal Cluster takes care of the more general-purpose computing. It’s smart design – not everything runs well on GPUs, especially legacy scientific code. Benchmark Wars and Real Performance

And then there’s the whole precision question. These systems can do way more if you’re willing to drop from 64-bit to 32, 16, or even 8-bit precision. At FP8, El Capitan theoretically hits 90 exaFLOPS while Jupiter manages about half that. The catch? Not all scientific workloads can tolerate that precision loss. But for AI training and inference? Lower precision is becoming the norm.
Where Supercomputing Is Headed
So what does this all mean? We’re seeing a shift from pure double-precision performance toward mixed-precision computing that better reflects real scientific and AI workloads. The introduction of the HPL-MxP benchmark in 2019 was a recognition of this trend, and the rankings there tell a different story than the traditional Top500.
In the mixed-precision benchmark, El Capitan still leads with 16.7 exaFLOPS, but Aurora jumps to second place ahead of Frontier. Jupiter sits fourth with 6.25 exaFLOPS. That’s still impressive for a system that isn’t finished. The question is whether these alternative benchmarks will eventually become the primary way we measure supercomputing power. Given how much AI and machine learning are driving scientific discovery these days, I wouldn’t be surprised.
