Here’s the thing: this isn’t just about spending a lot. It’s about spending a lot on a future you can’t really predict. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, an OpenAI alum, nailed the core dilemma. He said companies have to decide now how much compute they’ll need to serve models in, say, early 2027. That’s a three-year bet on demand. And he took a veiled shot at what he called “YOLOing” in the industry, which everyone saw as a direct reference to Altman’s aggressive posture. So you’ve got this weird dynamic where everyone agrees you have to spend insane amounts, but they’re also side-eyeing each other’s spending strategies. Meta’s Zuckerberg even said his company’s biggest risk is “not being aggressive enough.” When the giants and the startups are all saying the same thing, you know the capital furnace is just getting started.

Where the Rubber Meets the Road for Users

For users and developers, this compute crunch isn’t an abstract boardroom discussion. It has direct, tangible effects. Brockman’s example about the image generator is telling. To launch it, they had to cannibalize compute from their research division. Think about what that means. Every cool new feature or capability you’re waiting for—faster reasoning, more complex tasks, a new video model—is potentially in a queue, waiting for a slot on a server rack that doesn’t exist yet. It creates a world where launches are throttled not by ideas or engineering talent, but by raw hardware availability. And for enterprises building on these platforms, that uncertainty is a nightmare. How do you plan a product roadmap if your foundational AI provider might delay or scale back a key API because they’re compute-constrained? You basically can’t.

The Precarious Position Without a Safety Net

It hints at the sheer scale of the financial abyss they’re staring into. The whole industry is pushing chips into the center of the table, but OpenAI might be all-in with a thinner stack than its rivals. That raises the stakes for everyone, from investors to the developers relying on their stability. Can they really afford to be wrong?
