The Europa chip represents a significant leap from Axelera’s previous Metis lineup, delivering 629 trillion operations per second (TOPS) within a 45-watt power envelope. “What we’re intentionally trying to do is make sure that it’s not just net new designs. It’s, you have some hardware, you have got all your capital expenditures spent, but you’ve got some money that you can use to go upgrade. Everybody’s got a PCIe slot, so if I can plug into those, then it makes the sale, candidly, easier,” Crowell explained in an interview., according to recent developments

Europa is designed for high-performance edge computing scenarios that demand substantial processing power. Key target markets include:

While Axelera didn’t explicitly name competitors in its performance comparisons, company executives confirmed they were benchmarking against recent Nvidia products used for edge computing, including the L40 GPU and unspecified Jetson system-on-chip products.
Performance advantages appear substantial according to Axelera’s internal testing. The company claims Europa delivers three to six times higher performance per dollar for Llama 3 models compared to competing solutions. The 70-billion-parameter Llama 3 model showed particularly strong results, especially in four-chip configurations.

Europa will utilize the same Voyager software development kit currently supporting Metis chips, ensuring continuity for existing customers and developers. This unified software approach allows organizations to deploy both Metis and Europa chips within mixed solutions using a single development toolchain.
“So if companies want to deploy both Metis and Europa because they’ve got mixed use cases and mixed solutions, they absolutely can. It’s one tool, and that, to me, is really important, because ease of use is the only way any of these partners are going to actually go adopt Axelera’s chips,” Crowell emphasized.
Architectural Innovations
Europa introduces several architectural improvements that differentiate it from previous generations. The integration of 16 RISC-V vector processing cores enables the chip to handle pre- and post-processing tasks internally, eliminating the need to offload these functions to the system’s CPU.
“We now can take a lot of that on ourselves directly in a way that provides a much better total cost of ownership for the customers,” Crowell noted.
Additional features include an on-board video decoder optimized for computer vision workloads, further enhancing performance for video analytics applications. This integrated approach allows customers to run increasingly complex AI pipelines more effectively and cost-efficiently.
Market Availability and Future Roadmap
Scheduled for release in the first quarter of next year, Europa will initially be available in PCIe form factors supporting configurations from one to four cards per system. The company plans to expand to additional form factors in future iterations.
The announcement follows Axelera’s recent launch of a global partner program and the promotion of Crowell to lead business development across North and South America, with particular emphasis on the United States market.
